Greenfinch destined for UK Red List?

Though still a familiar garden bird, Greenfinch has declined by 59 per cent in the UK in just 10 years, prompting concerns for its status. Should the current rate of decline continue, Greenfinch could be moved straight to the Red List in the next update.

State of Nature 2016 | The status of the UK’s wildlife

On 14 September the State of Nature report was jointly published by over 50 wildlife organisations in the UK. Volunteers monitored over 9,670 species from birds to butterflies, plants to pondlife, spiders to snails. Using modern 'Red List' criteria, which identify species of the highest conservation concern enabled 8,000 species to be assessed. Of these, over half (56%) have declined since 1970, while 15% are extinct or threatened with extinction from Great Britain. This means that nature is faring worse in the UK than in most other countries.
