During the summer of 2023, Alar Ecology will be conducting a research project looking at the thermal properties of barn owl nest boxes. The main objective of this project will be to gather data that will inform nest box deployment in exposed positions subject to potential overheating.

Barn Owls benefit from the basic legal protection afforded to most wild birds by the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981 as amended) in England, Scotland and Wales. However, they are also subject to addition legal protection from disturbance when they are breeding. For this reason, it is important for surveyors to know how they can proceed without breaking the law and which of the available licensing options is most appropriate.
