Sharing ecological data

Alar Ecology has joined Consultants Portal, the new online recording and data management system for ecological consultants. The portal is now being used by over 100 consultancies in the UK for sharing ecological data.
“This portal is for consultants and other biodiversity professionals to enter and manage their species data online. These records will be shared via the NBN Gateway so they can be re-used to support research, education, conservation and decision-making. Data will be made available to relevant national recording schemes and to Local Environmental Records Centres.”
The portal is free for anyone to use, to manage both historic and current biological records. Features of the portal for sharing ecological data include:
- Data entry templates designed to suit specific survey methods;
- Submission of data in the field (via smartphone or tablet) or from the office;
- The ability to schedule data release on a specific date for each project, as agreed with the client;
- Numerous data download options and formats including GIS; and
- The ability to flag records as ‘sensitive’ to restrict access to approved users only.
“The system enables consultants to share their records without any extra effort. Data will be shared via the NBN Gateway and made available to national recording schemes and local environmental records centres.”
The Consultants Portal has been developed by the NBN Trust with support from Defra, the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Managent (CIEEM), the Association of Local Environmental Records Centres and the Biological Records Centre.
