World Curlew Day (April 21) aims to raise awareness of the plight of curlews worldwide and has found support from numerous environmental agencies. Events will be taking place across the UK and throughout the world, the proceeds going towards important local and national curlew conservation and monitoring projects aiming to restore endangered curlew species to a more favourable conservations status.

AudioMoth is a low-cost, full-spectrum acoustic logger. The firmware and software for the AudioMoth are open source (and programmable) and free to download. Over the coming weeks and months, Alar Ecology will be carrying out tests on the AudioMoth, to see how well it performs.
Greenfinch destined for UK Red List?

Though still a familiar garden bird, Greenfinch has declined by 59 per cent in the UK in just 10 years, prompting concerns for its status. Should the current rate of decline continue, Greenfinch could be moved straight to the Red List in the next update.

Barn Owls benefit from the basic legal protection afforded to most wild birds by the Wildlife & Countryside Act (1981 as amended) in England, Scotland and Wales. However, they are also subject to addition legal protection from disturbance when they are breeding. For this reason, it is important for surveyors to know how they can proceed without breaking the law and which of the available licensing options is most appropriate.
