BS 8583: Biodiversity guidance for business

In February 2015, the British Standards Institution (BSI) published BS 8583: Biodiversity. Guidance for businesses on managing the risks and opportunities. BS 8583, Biodiversity — Guidance for businesses on managing the opportunities and risks has been produced in association with BIS (Department of Business Innovation and Skills) and endorsed by Defra (Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs).
Traditional perceptions of biodiversity are often associated with the environment and ecosystems, but there are also implications for businesses. BS 8583:
- Explains what biodiversity is and why it is relevant to businesses and other organisations
- Describes how biodiversity impact can be assessed
- Explores ways to manage biodiversity, for example through supply-chain and land management
- Gives advice on planning for biodiversity protection and enhancement
The main theme of the new standard is that the linking commercial objectives with a sound biodiversity strategy enables organisations to be more cost-effective. It also enables them to meet their targets for sustainable development and environmental management.
David Fatscher, Head of Market Development for Sustainability at BSI said: “BS 8583 provides guidance on biodiversity issues that are likely to be relevant to different types of organization, methods available for assessing an organization’s impact (KPIs) and advice on planning for biodiversity protection and/or enhancement.”
